The Underground, 2025

Installation, Metal Tube

60 × 30 x 80 cm

The Underground is a self-contained internal circulation system created by recombining water systems. During my wanderings in China, I have seen various exposed water systems countless times. Due to numerous historical and social legacy issues, the water systems in many old houses were installed later. This is a common problem in many developing countries. Some of the steel pipes lying outside have been repaired and patched, while others have been completely dismantled, leaving a pile of discarded parts. This suddenly made me feel familiar, and it was very similar to my experience of wandering outside, so I restructured it. I used scrap steel pipes abandoned by the factory, cut them, spray-painted them, and continuously extended the other end of each pipe until the closed loop of the self-system was complete.

This work also began to explore the dilemma of the individual within the overall system. When the individual is stripped and eliminated by the collective society, where will “he” go?
